The Arts in Education program is made possible through a working partnership between the Acadiana Arts Council and the Lafayette Parish School System. The Lafayette Parish School System, the Acadiana Arts Council and the University of Louisiana at Lafayette are members of the Kennedy Center Partners in Education Team.
The Arts in Education program is broken down into four main areas:
Bright New Worlds artists provide a wide variety of arts activities, demonstrations and performances to enhance academic instruction. PACE (Primary Academic and Creative Experiences) is an artists-in-residence program that partners artists with teachers to bring innovative learning experiences to students by coordinating arts activities with classroom units or lessons. Through Touring Arts, community centers and school sites provide venues for performances by local, national and international touring companies.
Adventures for Educators is a division of the Arts in Education program with a special emphasis on arts experiences for educators. This includes Professional Development Workshops in the arts, funding for special arts projects through Arts Grants for Teachers and continuing education in the arts through a university course entitled Arts in the Curriculum. PACE: Primary Academic and Creative Experiences PACE is an innovative program that works through artist-teacher teams to better educate primary school students. Local artists work with kindergarten through third grade students on a regular basis, connecting basic curricular subjects such as math, social studies, science and language arts with visual and performing arts. The goal of PACE is to foster the cognitive, motor, social-emotional and language development of young children through meaningful opportunities in the arts. PACE artists work closely with classroom teachers to develop activities that support and coordinate with the teachers' lesson plans. PACE is a federally funded program and is only available to eligible Title I elementary schools in Lafayette Parish. Touring ArtsYou won't have to go far to discover the world of performance brought to you through the Touring Arts program. Modern dance, creative dramatics, instrumental music, puppetry and storytelling are only a few of the offerings by international, national, and locally known performers. Performances are divided into three categories: Schoolsite Performances take place on the grounds of the hosting school and the artist travels to the site; Community Center Performances take place at central performing arts facilities; and Community Events, open to the entire family and the general public. For Community Center performances, schools are responsible for student transportation and tickets must be purchased in advance. The Professional Development Workshops expand teachers' understanding of the visual and performing arts and help to reinforce classroom curricula. Through these workshops teachers and parents learn practical and proven techniques for teaching in the arts, teaching about the arts and teaching a variety of subjects through the arts. Any Lafayette Parish public school teacher, librarian or guidance counselor directly instructing children is eligible to apply for grants that fund direct student involvement in the arts; use the arts to teach non-arts subjects; fund the acquisition of arts books, films, equipment, etc.; or support arts education training for teachers. The purpose of this grant program is to encourage educators to design and develop creative and innovative arts projects by providing support and funding through a granting procedure. The deadline for applying for funding for Round II is April 25. Grant guidelines and current application forms as well as this year's grant deadlines may be obtained from your school's Art Liason teacher or from the Acadiana Arts Council. This grant program is only available for Lafayette Parish public educators.Individual teachers can request up to $500. Shared grants submitted by two or more teachers, either within a school or between schools, will be considered for amounts up to $1,000. There is no limit on the number of applications that may be submitted.
