ACADIANA ARTS COUNCIL ANNOUNCES
WINNERS OF SOUTHERN OPEN 2008

Juror Peter Frank awarded artists
during ArtWalk at the AcA on May 10

During Second Saturday ArtWalk on May 10, the Acadiana Center for the Arts broke new records. Over 1,700 guests walked through the galleries to view the openings of three new exhibits.

Southern Open 2008 is a competitive visual arts exhibition showcasing the talents of artists residing in Texas, Louisiana, Mississippi, Alabama and Florida. A nationally recognized juror, Peter Frank edited and selected 105 pieces out of 777 submissions to be included in the exhibition. Southern Open 2008 artists are comprised of emerging, mid-career and master artists from across the gulf south using a wide range of artwork media including, but not limited to, painting, sculpture, photography and film.

Broken Rainbow: Works by Lou Blackwell opened in the Side Gallery. Blackwell was awarded a solo exhibit in the Side Gallery Series for being the 1st place winner of Southern Open 2007.

Ange Riehl from the Louisiana Crafts Guild also opened her new exhibit About the Bead in the Vault. This exhibit features lamp worked glass bead jewelry, loom worked beaded panels, bead embroidered panels, beaded paintings and pencil drawings.

During the opening reception for Southern Open 2008, Peter Frank announced the 1st, 2nd and 3rd place winners. The Acadiana Arts Council would like to congratulate the following artists on a job well done!

Peter Frank also dedicated the exhibition to Elemore Morgan, Jr., who is recovering from open-heart surgery in Maryland.
