New Orleans-based multi-instrumentalist and vocalist Theresa Andersson's latest work draws from a wide range of roots and pop influences and makes the most of her ability to perform on more than one instrument simultaneously via digital looping technology. Her voice is as much of an instrument as the drums, guitar, violin and improvised sonic devices she'll feature in these visionary solo shows.
The native Swede moved to the Crescent City at 18, and has since worked with many of our state's musical masters. Most of her latest release was recorded in her kitchen, the setting for her wildly popular one-woman-show YouTube videos. Her home was truly her musical laboratory, as it was there that she fashioned a vibraphone with soda pop bottles filled with varying amounts of liquid. "I did all this crazy stuff," she explains. "Instead of a keyboard, I filled up wine glasses with different amounts of water and rubbed the rims to get different notes; I'd seen a clown do that when I was a kid." Even the room itself is audible, particularly on the vintage R&B number "Introducing the Kitchenettes." "The kitchen sounds amazing, it has wonderful, natural reverb."
Rolling Stone magazine describes the proceedings thusly: "Swedish vocalist blends chockablock rhythms, fairy tale instrumentation and dreamlike melodies for music that recalls a spacier, sultrier Feist."
